Billing Brook School

English as an Additional Language

At Billing Brook School we have a number of pupils who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL).

"If a child was exposed to more than one language (which may include English) during early development, the language other than English should be recorded, irrespective of the child's proficiency in English."

To support pupils who have EAL we use a range of resources such as Communication in Print, Speech and Language time as well as providing specific resources to support language acquisition.

The pupils will be supported in their acquisition of English through a variety of methods and immersed in an environment rich in language. Across the school the use of Communication in Print ensures that pupils receive pictorial cues to support their understanding of the written word. When talking in class, pupils are supported in their communication with communication boards as well as other communication aids.

To support our pupils and families we have created some resources to support the acquisition of English.
