Billing Brook School

Poetry Slam Competition

On Thursday 7th February we held a Poetry Slam in our KS3 and KS4 department. Classes or small groups, as well as some individuals, 'battled' it out to showcase their poetry skills. Poems were based on the theme of 'Celebrating Us' and allowed pupils to share things they liked about their peers and themselves. The pupils performed the poems in front of a large audience and all participants made a huge effort to engage the audience. They produced videos, used props and recited their poems by heart in an effort to win the 'Poetry Slam' trophy!

The judges watched in awe of the participants, who showed confidence and style in their performances, awarding marks for each against the slam criteria. Pupils needed to Show confidence, Look at the audience, have an Awesome voice, and make it Memorable.

After much deliberation the judges awarded the trophy to an individual performance - a pupil in KS3, Joe! Well done. All pupils received a certificate of recognition, and second and third prize won a class poetry book as well. It was a great day and the pupils and staff all worked really hard to create the poems and performances!

Our next Literacy competition is the Monologues competition on Thursday 7th March.
